What we offer in our YAC service

Burnham and Berrow Medical Centre Young Adult Clinic (YAC) is a confidential service for young people.

We are really pleased to announce that the Young Adult Clinic has secured for the second year running The RESPECT Gold Award .This is great news as we constantly strive to deliver a high standard of care at all times, and ensure that we address all health issues concerning young adults. By securing the award for the second year running clearly states that we have been recognised again for the excellent work we do with young adults.

Our service provides a safe and confidential environment for ALL young people registered with the practice, to discuss their health issues ( we will also see any young adult who are not registered with the practice for Contraception services).

The clinic has been running now for over 25 years and over those years the service has developed from being a Family Planning Service to being able to deal or refer to the appropriate bodies regarding broader issues for example. Bullying, depression, sexual identity, disability, abuse, smoking, eating problems, relationships and any issues that cause you concern.

We have a YAC leaflet which outlines the services we provide and some very useful web-sites please pass onto your friend, girlfriends and boyfriends.

The staff of the Young Adult Clinic would also like to thank you for attending this service and for all your comments and feedback which has helped us to make a difference in the way young adults services are delivered. We are always open to new suggestions regarding the clinic so please do not hesitate to inform us by completing one of the suggestion forms available in the Clinic.

Burnham and Berrow Medical Centre is committed to providing a safe and confidential environment for ALL young people registered with the Practice to discuss their health issues such as:

Bullying

Contraception

Mental Health

Disability

Sexual Health

Skin problems

Abuse

Identity

Relationships

Caring

in fact, ANY issue that cause YOU concern other than minor physical ailments

The young adult clinic is run by both doctors and nurses who are trained in dealing with young people.

You are more than welcome to bring along a friend or parent for support.

We encourage feedback on our service, by completing one of our evaluation questionnaires.

It is your clinic, so it is important that we understand as a community of young people what we can do to improve the service. And continue to be young people

The only reason why we might have to consider passing on confidential information without your permission, would be to protect you or someone else from very serious harm. We would always try to discuss this with you first.

However, if you registered at Burnham & Berrow Medical Centre and require help but cannot make the Drop-in-Clinic, ask at reception to speak to a YAC Medical Team Member. If this is not possible, you can ask to see one of our doctors. If you would feel more comfortable, you can bring a friend or relation with you for support.

Burnham Medical Centre YAC has, in achieved the Gold RESPECT award and we became the first GP practice in Somerset to be awarded “You’re Welcome” accreditation status by the Department of Health.

We are delighted to have been awarded the Young People Friendly Approved Certificate of Recognition for 2014

The “Young People Friendly” status is only given to services that go the extra mile for their young clients and set a “gold standard” in service quality. To achieve the award, we had to be able to show that we have improved the accessibility, choice and quality of services offered to young people aged 11-19 years.
